This project was very different as we wren't permitted to use the traditional television equipment we were all familiar with. In June 2010, the executive producer and I made a trip to Beijing, to meet the project director at the headquarters of NewAuto, the Chinese television equipment manufacturer. During this visit we assessed the tools on offer, and made suggested changes to allow the system to work in a way we thought would help the needs of the producton.
In September, the two of us returned to China, but this time we visited Guangzhou and were situated in the office the project would be based in. We had a working edit suite and a partially set up office which allowed us to spend a week testing, and gave me the chance to experiment with workflows, and write an instruction manual on how the edit system works, but focused on the needs of our workflow.
In November we returned to Guangzhou, but this time with a large production team, that also included eight editors, who were split into two shifts of four. Each team had to edit and deliver a one hour highlights programme of the multi-sport event for distribution around the world, but mostly in Asia. The event was very succesful, especially considering it was edited on seven editors who had never seen the software prior to arriving in China.
